About the Event

During the teenage years, it is developmentally appropriate for teens to increasingly seek support, feedback, and advice from peers, shifting away from parents and caregivers. This is necessary as they begin to transition to living independently, but can be a nerve-wracking time for families, especially when teens are suspected of using drugs and/or alcohol.  Please join Ann-Marie Shibley, LMSW to learn about the warning signs of substance use, and ways families can take a proactive, values-based approach to addressing drug and alcohol use. The lecture will also address common misconceptions including identifying the real “gateway” drug, and why lecturing is not typically a productive parenting strategy.
